Command Post was a
newsletter created by Greg Novak, at the urging of Frank
Chadwick who suggested it as a supplement for the
Command
Decision games by Game
Designer's Workshop. The first issue was published in the
winter of 1990, the first draft "cranked out on (a) Smith
Corona Word Processor" and promptly lost by the printer.
The supply of articles from the
devoted (Command Decision) players started to flood in, and
the problems of the (Command Post) began to grow. Issue 2,
with the help of Jeff Glassco, covered the French Army of
1940, and so covered a gap in the CD Order of Battle. The
issue ran the planned 16 pages, though most of it was on a
single subject, and appeared in the summer of 1990. Issue 3
also ran 16 pages, and made it out in December of 1990.
During this time, of course,
Saddam Hussein decided to invade Kuwait, and CP 4 became the
first to appear with a supplement, with 16 pages on the Gulf
War Order of Battle. CP 5 followed suit, and was the first
done on desktop publishing, and ran 24 pages, with an
additional 24 page supplement on the Japanese Army in WWII. CP
6 followed with 16 pages and a 24 page supplement on the USMC
in WWII. CP 7 was the last, with 24 pages, and a 24 page
supplement on the Korean War. However the times between issues
became further and further apart as the size of each CP grew
larger and larger.
The problem with CP became the
fact that interest by CD players was there, but as the product
did not go out in the regular distribution net to hobby shops
and such, it tended to end up at the bottom of the production
schedule. The result was the conversion of the Command Post,
to the Command Post Quarterly.1 |

Special
Compendium of Command Post,
published in 1995. The Compendium was intended to
give readers of Command Post Quarterly a glimpse at
material originally provided in the Command Post
newsletter, with enough fresh material to appeal to veteran
readers of both publications.
