Operations Magazine
Operations Magazine was established as a
house organ for The Gamers,
for discussion of its wargaming products. The first
issue was produced in the summer of 1991 printed regularly
until The Gamers were taken over by Multi-Man Publishing. The
magazine was produced quarterly, until Issue 42 when
production slowed to semi-regular status (with only one issue
being produced in 2003, and two issues a year in 2004 and
2005).
Bruce Monnin,
formerly of
The
Boardgamer, became editor of Operations
beginning with the Fall 2004 edition (issue 46). The stated
aim of Multi-Man Publishing was to have Operations be
to their line of games what
The General was to
Avalon Hill's line of products.
Of note to
tactical wargamers has been the emphasis of the magazines on
firstly the TCS series of games, and later, the availability
of additional Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit
scenarios. The magazine was an exclusive source for "official"
additions to the ASLSKs.
In the summer
of 2008, the first special issue was released, with a stand
alone wargame in the issue (an operational mini game treatment
on the invasion of Iwo Jima) as well as a historical module
for Advanced Squad Leader, including map, campaign
game, and two scenarios covering the battle of Singling. The
battle had been covered twice before in "official" ASL
products, once as an ASL scenario and once as a Deluxe ASL
scenario; the historical map rendered the battle on the actual
terrain. Three special editions were published, and the
magazine apparently ceased publication in the summer of 2011
in favour of a retooled periodical named Special Ops. |
