GMT was founded by
Gene Billingsley, Mike Crane, and Terry Shrum, and named the company
by using the initials of their first names. Crane and Shrum
reportedly ceased their association with GMT to found their own
business, the Fresno Gaming Association. They published their first
games in 1990, which were well received operational-level studies of
famous battles such as the Ia Drang Valley and Operation
MARKET-GARDEN. Their subject matter has included ancient warfare and
20th Century aerial battles amidst 20th Century conflict, but
tactical-level 20th Century warfare was not added to the repertoire
until the release of Combat Commander in 2006.
A "house organ",
C3i Magazine, was begun in
1992.
